LOCATION ICELAND
There are 360.000 people that live in Iceland and therefore everybody knows everybody which can be handy when you have to do things quickly. The total area is 103,333 km² but the road system is very good so it is easy to reach your destination. The national language is Icelandic and almost everybody speak English. Despite its mid-Atlantic location, Iceland is on Greenwich Mean Time all year round. The electrical current in Iceland is 220 volts, 50 HZ AC. Most electrical outlets are DIN (the German industrial standard – two round pins). Local airlines link Iceland with more than 20 gateways in Europe and North America. Flight time is 2.5 – 5 hours from Western Europe and 5 – 6 hours from the east coast of North America which makes Iceland a favourable centralised location.
20% TAX INCENTIVES
The State Treasury operates a reimbursement plan whereby producers will receive a 20% rebate of film and TV production costs incurred in Iceland, costs incurred whilst filming on Icelandic soil. We can assist you in making your production qualify for that. When more than 80% of the total production cost of a motion picture or television programme is incurred in Iceland, the reimbursement is calculated on the basis of the total production cost incurred within the European Economic Area. The reimbursement scheme does not cover production of commercials or music videos.
CREW
With so many high quality foreign productions over the years in Iceland we have established high quality crew members in all areas of filmmaking and photography. Icelandic crew members are hard working people and can often do more than one job if that is required. Over the years more and more productions hire local staff.
CARS
Although the road system is very good there are some remote locations that require special super jeeps to reach there. Icelanders are specialist in enhancing ordinary jeeps into off road monsters. So it is ok to say that you can rent all types and sizes of cars to suit your needs.
EQUIPMENT
There are three big equipment rentals Iceland and each of them are connected with support from one the big rental companies in the world. So as the long as the order is made in time they can provide almost anything. Still they have a very impressive line of equipments in stock.
WEATHER
A producer once joked “If you don’t like the weather in Iceland just wait for five minutes”. Although that is a bit over the top the weather can change quite fast. But that is also a part of the energy here. The weather can create some dramatic scenes that you could not imagine. So more often it works with you rather then against you.
TEMP AND LIGHT
During the summer time Iceland must be top production value as the light for shooting is good for 18 hours. But in the winter the spectacular Aurora borealis make up for light shortages.
